"Sebastián Piana en Tinta Roja" proposes a journey into the black heart of tango

"Sebastián Piana en Tinta Roja" is the name of the book recently
published by Mil Campanas publishing house, dedicated to the figure of
Argentine pianist, conductor and composer, creator of the milonga
porteña, which gathers 12 compositions for piano recovered by the
musicians Nacho Piana and Shino Ohnaga.

Born in the neighborhood of Almagro in 1903, Piana was one of the
composers of Argentine popular music, who transformed the
language of tango: he broke with the canon of "tango emblanquecido" and,
from the blackness, created and renewed styles.

"Sobre el pucho", a tango he composed with his father and which, premiered
in 1922, became his first hit, marked the beginning of a long
road in which he created more than 500 works.

In the 1930s, Piana renewed the milonga genre; associated in
the lyrics with Homero Manzi. The pianist considered as his greatest
merit, the fact of having created "a suburban milonga, of the city,
different from the country milonga".

"Sebastián Piana en Tinta Roja" is the book, in trilingual version
-Spanish, English, Japanese- that will be available from February 20
in the main bookstores of the country and on the website
milcampanas.com.ar.

"He revolutionized the milonga ciudadana. He was the creator of the milonga
candombe, his own style that crystallized in several of his compositions
and was incorporated as of 1940 by the Orquesta Típica Candombe, the
only one that added three Afro-Argentine drums. He also made an essential contribution
to the Creole waltz", synthesized Nacho Piana, one of the authors and
grandson of Sebastián.

The book transcribes, for the first time, the 12 compositions included
in the book "Sebastián Piana por Sebastián Piana" (1969), a task that
faced the Japanese pianist Shino Onhaga and that is expressed in works
as "Milonga sentimental", "Milonga del 900", "Viejo ciego", "Juan
Manuel", "El Pescante" and "Milonga Triste".

and "Sobre el pucho", a tango he composed with his father, which was premiered at
in 1922 and became his first hit.

"Piana's musical world is fascinating. Invincible. We were given the
enormous responsibility of translating these works to paper as he
played them," explained Ohnaga, a pianist based in Argentina and
specialized in the study of tango.

The book also includes texts by Juan Falú, Lidia Borda and Susana
Rinaldi, as well as contributions by some of Sebastián
Piana's students, who was a renowned teacher. "The history of
Sebastián Piana is the history of tango song", writes Rinaldi.

This publication by Piana-Ohnaga is part of a line of musical works
