"Astor, we": a tango dance piece

"Astor, we" is the name of the work of choreographer Leonardo Cuello, which combines modern dance and tango, and will premiere next Thursday at 8 pm at the Centro Cultural de la Cooperación, to pay tribute to the Argentine musician Astor Piazzolla on the centenary of his birth, celebrated in 2021.

"It is a show that speaks of the artist, his encounter and creation deeply connected with the tango world and also with Buenos Aires, with the city," Cuello told Télam. "The work is free stroke, which is how I have been working with tango. I don't believe, nor have I ever wanted to stick to the "rules" or the usual canons of the tango show genre", he added.

About this journey through the universe of the great Argentine bandoneonist, the renowned director said that what interests him most "is to merge with freedom and to be able to combine elements of dance, theatricality and dramaturgy", as he does in each of his shows.

"Thinking of creating something for Astor liberated even more that line in me, what other artist than Piazzolla could have generated that freedom? Astor encourages it in all artists of any language, because he always stimulates the free search," said Cuello.

With ten dancers on stage and scenographic structures -mobile and of urban design- "Astor, we" travels through the "Piazzollean" spirit, in a city in permanent ebullition, from a poetic staging and with music by Piazzolla (1921-1992).

The play can be seen in eight unique performances on Thursdays in June and July at 8 pm at the Solidaridad hall of the Centro Cultural de la Cooperación (Corrientes 1543).

Leonardo Cuello's Company has been working creatively on the search for new ways of proposing the tango stage since 2005.
