Granada Tango Festival: March 14 to 19

The city of Granada will host from March 14 to 19 the thirty-fifth edition of the International Tango Festival of Granada, the oldest in the world along with that of the city of Montevideo, "with a top-level programming and with the core of its main performances at the Teatro Municipal Isabel la Católica".
This theater will host the premiere of the documentary filmed at the Festival of Granada 'Viejo Piazzola, magical Astor', directed by Enrique Arias and produced by Curva Polar. This was announced by the Councilor for Culture, María de Leyva, who has defined the event as "an international benchmark of the genre, due to its longevity and the artistic quality of all the glories of tango that have passed through its stage".
Under the slogan 'Solitude also has history', this 35th edition of the Tango Festival will present on March 15 the World Tango Summit in Granada, with the performance of the Italian pianist and his trio Fabrizzio Mocata and the duo Tangarte from Sweden.
The program, as detailed by its director, Horacio Rébora, also includes the performance of the harmonica player Franco Luciani -awarded as one of the five best Argentine instrumentalists- or the Candombe de danza company, from the city of Medellín, "which will offer a choreographic show of surprising creativity".
Rébora has also highlighted the presence of the group 'Flores Negras', formed by four female singers "where voices are transformed into instruments"; the performance of the "remarkable bandoneon player" Héctor Cartechini, direct disciple of the great Anibal Troilo or the closing show of the contest "that will be memorable again with the trio of César Angelelli and the singer Verónica Silva who was the voice of the international success of Gotan Proyect".
It has also been foreseen that the 2022 world champions of stage tango, the couple formed by Ricardo Astrada and Constanza Vieyto, will be part of the cast of this 35th edition.
In addition, as De Leyva explained, there will be a program of parallel activities "for the enjoyment of the whole city in places such as our Plaza del Carmen, where the traditional popular dance will be held" or Plaza Nueva, "with a popular dance and a performance in which Osvaldo Jiménez sings poems by Alfredo Lombardo".
At the Palacio de Quinta Alegre, there will be master classes by Constanza Vieyto and Ricardo Astrada and, as a novelty, also at La Chumbera, the tango choreographic show 'Abrazo de tango en mi soledad', with Sergio de Lope as guest artist.
In short, he added, "are several ways to bring the tango in all its manifestations to the street, to the heart of our city, as are its squares and public spaces, and available to all granadinos and granadinas who want to be surprised by it".
The festival increases this year the offer of parallel activities with proposals such as the edition and presentation of a CD in Caja Rural in tribute to Osvaldo Jiménez or the conference of the academic Matías Mauricio at the University, in addition to the traditional parallel activities that the Festival has been offering in previous editions.
The mayor, who recalled the presence in Granada during these years of more than 1.500 great figures of tango as Roberto Goyeneche, Eladia Blázquez, Horacio Ferrer, Osvaldo Pugliese, Susana Rinaldi or Héctor Alterio, has framed this event a "a stable agenda of festivals and major cultural events that Granada has, which is unique in our country and that shows us the importance of making culture a real engine of growth and a tractor for economic recovery," he stressed.
"The International Tango Festival of Granada is one of them, which has been working for 35 years to make culture in Granada and to bring to our city the best of the genre in its main manifestations: music, song and dance, both in its scenic form and in its popular practice," he concluded.
