Tango and carousels

The tango duo of vibraphone and marimba played by Martín Sánchez and César Martinini will perform next Friday and Sunday in two carousels in Buenos Aires, which will start a series of recitals in those venues as a way of "returning tango to the places it used to inhabit", said the marimba player.

"My old man always told me that when I was a kid, tango was heard everywhere, even in the carousels! That salad of sensations, added to the desire to spread tango, led to the idea of taking the vibraphone and the marimba to the streets, to the squares and, why not, to the rickshaws", Martinini told Télam.

In the same sense, the vibraphonist Sanchez risks that with the cycle 'El tango vuelve a la calesita' "we return to that childhood already anachronistic but that encloses its charm of porteño belonging".

The first two dates of the evening and carousel tour will be, always at 5 pm and presented by Oscar del Priore, on Friday 5 at Plaza Arenales (Mercedes 4058 and New York, Villa Devoto neighborhood) and on Sunday 7 at El Carrousel de Palermo (Avenida Infanta Isabel 110).

In addition to tangos, waltzes and milongas played on such unique instruments, each meeting will include the narration of anecdotes and stories that allow the reconstruction and dissemination of the history of the porteño calesitas and the musical genre in question.

The Sánchez-Martinini duo, reunited since 2014 after having formed with the renowned marimbist and vibraphonist Marcos Cabezaz, decided to venture into tango and studied arrangements and interpretation with Andrés Linetzky, performing regularly since then and having won the New Tango Ensembles contest organized by the Asociación Tango SinFin.

- Télam: What repertoire will you be performing next Friday and Sunday?
- César Martinini: The repertoire of the concerts is composed of classic tangos, waltzes and milongas, plus a tango by Nehuén Martino who is one of the young referents of current tango and who has been doing a very important job in the diffusion of the genre.

- T: What is the imprint you bring to the tango repertoire?
- C.M.: The first thing that strikes us about our proposal is the sonority of the instruments. But if we can abstract from this issue, we do not find something too new or different. In principle we seek to enter the genre with a lot of respect, and if this makes us find our own style or imprint someday, welcome. We would like to be recognized in the future not only for being "the guys who play tango with weird instruments", but for having an interesting musical and tango proposal.

- Martín Sánchez: The stylistic reference we use is based on the guitars of Roberto Grela, Palermo Trío and Adolfo Berón to mention a few, and that is mixed with the fervor of the style of Horacio Salgán and Ciriaco Ortiz, which among our tastes is the one that makes us smile the most when we listen to it. And I think that is also the key of the duo, beyond how solemn and pretentious we may seem, the condition of the concerts is to get a few smiles and spend a nice time with everyone.

- T: Are you worried about being tied to a nostalgic question or do you just bet on that evocative thing?
- M.S.: Nostalgia, evocation, what could be more tango than that? We aim to sound like tango and, for that, we need that nostalgia and evocation. Personally, I am more concerned about being tied to a question of children's music. Perhaps because of the exotic nature of the instruments and the context of the carousel, it could be interpreted that we make children's music, when in fact we make tangos for everyone.
